Ram spikers finish with 2-4 HOIAC mark

The Greene County volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over South Hamilton on Oct. 12 and added a 3-0 victory over Saydel on Oct. 13. It was Senior Night for the Rams as they honored Eliza Carlson, Lily Muir and Brianna Osterson. The Rams finish the season 2-4 in HOIC play and 7-15 overall.

The Rams were 0-6 at the Winterset Tournament on Oct. 17, losing 2-0 matches to Winterset, Webster City and Red Oak. The first two teams are Class 4A schools and Red Oak is ranked eighth in Class 3A.

Rams 25-25-25, S Hamilton 19-22-13

Greene County won their first Heart of Iowa Conference match of the season, defeating South Hamilton 25-19, 25-22 and 25-13. 

GC was down 5-10 in the first set before rallying to go ahead 17-16. The Rams then pulled away for the win. The second game was close throughout with GC down 20-21 before scoring five of the final six points and winning 25-22. In the final set, the score was tied 6-6, but the Rams turned a 12-10 lead into a 25-13 victory.

The Rams posted 35 kills against the Hawks with Brianna Osterson and Lily Muir having 12 apiece. Natalie Heupel set 20 assists. The Rams defended their court well with 31 digs. Osterson led the category with eight digs, followed by Muir with seven and Emma Hoyle with six.

Greene County served an efficient 92 percent on 69 of 75 attempts. Hoyle fired 18/18 with three aces and Osterson stroked 20/22 with five ace serves. 

Rams 25-25-25, Saydel 18-17-17

The Rams second conference victory came Tuesday against Saydel as they downed the Eagles 25-18, 25-17, 25-17.

Osterson hammered Saydel with 15 kills. Muir had six kills and Isabella Schroeder collected five. Heupel set 15 assists. Muir topped the chart with four digs. Osterson and Carlson each had three.

Osterson led the team going 14/14 with four ace serves. Heupel stroked 15/15, Hoyle 10/13 with a pair of aces, and Carlson 15/19 with an ace.

Winterset tournament

Greene County lost to three opponents at the Winterset tTournament on Saturday. The hosts defeated the Rams 21-9 and 21-11. The Lynx of Webster City won 21-13 and 21-15 and Red Oak was victorious 21-8 and 21-13.

Osterson posted 15 kills on the day, followed by Muir with nine. Natalie Heupel set 27 assists. She and Carlson led the team in digs with 10 apiece. Katrina Heupel had nine, Osterson eight and Muir and Hoyle each with six.

Top servers on the day included Katrina Heupel 14/14; Hoyle 15/16 and one ace; Natalie Heupel 10/12 with an ace; Osterson 9/11, two aces; Carlson 11/13.

As a team, the Rams posted 18/21 serves for 86 percent against Winterset’s 35/38 for 92 percent. In the Webster City match, Greene County had 27/30 serves for 86 percent while the Lynx posted 37/40 for 93 percent. Against Red Oak the Rams had 20/22 for 90 percent and the Tigers had 39/41 for 95 percent.

The Rams opened the postseason in 3A Region 2 action against Southeast Valley (Gowrie) in the new Greene County High School gym in Jefferson on Monday. The winner will play Humboldt or Algona on Wednesday, Oct. 21, in Humboldt.
